Your First Hires Will Determine Your Startup Success Or Failure

hiringThe secret to any startup success is surrounding yourself with the right people from the very first moment you can. Yes, you had the amazing seed idea, but that isn’t enough to carry you through to success and longevity, and nor are your skills and your skills alone.

You see, no one was born with all the traits you need to go from nothing to something. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and you need to counterbalance your weaknesses with someone else’s strengths. Even Steve Jobs had to do it, and he was Steve Jobs.

Quite simply put, the first people you bring onto your startup are going to have a huge impact on your growth and your future. As such, the first people you hire should be one of these types:

A Creative

The thing with creatives is, they see the world differently. They are ideas people. They are brave and courageous people, the kind of folk that doesn’t just want to think there is no such thing as a silly question but actually believes it.

They know that nothing can come from comfort zones, and so they push themselves in an attempt to find genius angles. A lot of the time, it will be their twist on things or their sudden realization that there is a whole other market you haven’t thought about, that will see your future get a whole lot brighter.

A Techy

When you think techy, you are probably thinking nerd or geek, someone that can code and build computers and mend them when something goes wrong, and you would be right. But they are also much more than that.

Someone who is good with technology will also be able to improve your operational efficiency by implementing a CMMS work order system, or make your website that much more SEO friendly, or be able to introduce a safe way to bring your own devices to work.

All of these will be invaluable to you when you are starting out and unable to pay an IT support firm for their services.

A Project Manager

If this is your first time starting a company then you’ll learn very quickly that there is a lot of stuff to do, and a lot of that stuff will fall on your lap and your lap only; it is part of being the leader.

You need to be able to focus on the part of the business that will stimulate growth, such as getting investment etc. That is where a PM comes in. They are very process-oriented and will make sure there is a system in place to make everything run smoothly.

They will make sure deadlines are met and projects go as they should and that anyone that needs to b held accountable will be held accountable.

A Money Person

You are going to be too close to this project to be able to think about money from a completely neutral standpoint, which is why you need to bring in a finance controller. They will be able to tell you what is working and what isn’t.

What is making money and what is costing you dearly. They will be able to look after your books and give you the best tax options. But more than this, they will be able to explain how every one of your decisions affects the bottom-line, and that is what this whole thing is about, isn’t it?
