Prophylactic Thinking In Business

Professional chess grandmasters are incredible. They are also enigmas to many people: how can they possibly see twenty moves ahead? Isn’t that impossible? There are more possible iterations of a game of chess than atoms in the universe and yet these players are capable of calculating such variations to a depth of twenty moves? It seems impossible.

Running businessman.

It also stands to reason that people who are not chess grandmasters cannot really understand how they think. They have developed a particular set of skills over a long time and have put them to use playing chess. However, many of the principles that grandmasters understand better than most actually apply to lots of other spheres of life.

One important one is prophylaxis. The idea is to try and anticipate and deter potential attacks or threats before they become dangerous to you. Chess players use this to neutralize their opponents, but if both players are exceptionally strong, they may end up playing the perfect game: a draw. It is not that exciting, but it is safe. Running your business in a similar way is a good idea. Here are a few things to think about prophylactically which could save your business time and money:

Anticipate Your Employees Needs

Anticipating your employees need or requests before they make them will ensure that they are happy at work. A study found that happy employees are 12% more productive. Thinking ahead can actually make your business work better and can improve profits.

Planning ahead

Being organized and planning ahead is obviously a brilliant skill to have in business. Scheduling future obligations and projects is one thing but if you factor into your plans things that are more unexpected you can ensure that your business is more versatile and more able to weather any potential storms.

This could include making provisions for future undulations in the economy, which can be rather volatile as everybody knows. Amassing significant savings is good business practice. A business owner who only plans for the good times is only going to last as long as they do, and unfortunately, that isn’t as long as one would hope.

Security Measures

Businesses are not just concerned with the world of commerce, and since they operate in the real world, they need to protect themselves against a variety of threats. Incidents as unpleasant as break-ins can be really detrimental for any business.

Employing a security company like Cannon Guards is a good way to put your mind at ease. Cyberspace invites all sorts of threats too so investing in software to protect your online infrastructure is a good move too. These things cost money but they will suddenly seem like a great deal if something happens and they are not there to protect you.

Legal Measures

Finally, there are just so many potentially sticky legal spots that a business can get into, it is just common sense to retain legal counsel. Not only will they jump into action if you are ever involved in a legal dispute, they can also help you avoid some of the common pitfalls and prevent you from getting into trouble in the first place.

Incidentally, many top grandmasters can play chess without looking at the board. You do not need to be that good, but being able to think ahead is an invaluable skill in both chess and business.
